The Bengle Documentation: Evolution in Espresso

This documentation details the Bengle, Decent's next-generation espresso machine. Under the open-source approach, CAD files and other documentation is provided for free to invite modders and other third-party individuals to make their own designs based on Bengle.

    1. Bengle unboxing

In this guide and accompanying video, John demonstrates the unboxing and assembly of Bengle, Decent's next-generation espresso machine.

    Key Steps:

  • Unboxing: Carefully open the carton and slide the machine out wheels-first. It is crucial to retain all packing materials and custom foam for future travel or servicing.
  • Setup: Remove protective wraps and install the water tank, group head handle, and portafilter.
  • Connectivity: Attach the new USB-C tablet, connect all necessary cables, and power on.
  • Finalizing: Ensure the standby switch is correctly positioned before filling the tank for its first use.

  • 2. Bengle dimensions

This technical guide provides precise measurements for Bengle, including its 250mm width, 395mm height (with tablet), and 425mm depth. It details clearance requirements for the water tank, steam wand extension, and portafilter handle, ensuring owners can accurately plan counter space and overhead cabinet compatibility for the machine.

We've officially finalized the custom foam inserts for the Bengle's shipping suitcase. Using high-density, helmet-grade material, we've engineered precision-cut compartments that cradles the machine and every accessory securely. This isn't just packaging—it's a durable, reusable transit system designed to ensure your Bengle arrives in showroom condition, no matter where in the world you are.

    4. Bengle CAD files and dimensions

To support the community and custom builders, we've released the full CAD files and precise dimensions for Bengle. These technical resources cover everything from the 250mm width to internal component spacing. Whether you're designing a custom espresso cart or specialized accessories, we're providing the exact data you need.

    5. Water recommendations for the DE1 and Bengle

Water quality is the most critical factor for the longevity of Decent Espresso machines. Using improper water causes scale buildup and heater failures, which are not covered under warranty.

    Recommended Water Types:

  • Ideal (No Descaling Needed): Reverse Osmosis (RO), distilled, or deionized (e.g., ZeroWater) water under 30ppm TDS. The machine's stainless steel components are designed to handle these "soft" waters without corrosion.
  • Safe (Annual Descaling): Water between 30–120ppm TDS or soft bottled waters (e.g., Volvic, Crystal Geyser). Use a 5% citric acid solution only.
  • Hard Water (>120ppm TDS): Not recommended. Requires frequent descaling (every 4–8 weeks) to prevent permanent damage.

  • Key Guidelines:

  • Remineralization: Avoid adding chlorides (calcium/magnesium chloride), as they cause corrosion. If using Third Wave Water, use it at 3/4 strength or less and descale 1–2 times per year.
  • Filtration: Standard carbon filters do not prevent scale. Use an LSI (Langelier Saturation Index) calculator to determine your water's scaling potential.
  • Maintenance: If the machine is used with scaling water, the resulting repairs require shipping the unit to Hong Kong at the owner's expense.
