DE1 App: Advanced Profiling & Customization

This documentation provides a comprehensive guide to the DE1 tablet application, covering core functionalities like shot pulling and profile customization. It includes instructions for navigating different "skins," utilizing extensions like "Describe Your Espresso," and managing advanced settings for pressure, flow, and temperature to optimize espresso extraction.

    1. Damian's many tools

    Source: Damian's many tools

This article and video highlight the contributions of Damian Brakel, a prolific member of the Decent Espresso community. The video showcases his innovative coffee routine featuring several self-developed tools:

  • Bluetooth Scale Adaptor: A 3D-printable mount that keeps the scale dry under the drip tray.

  • eWDT Tool: A battery-powered puck grooming device with open-source 3D files and PCB designs.

  • DSX Skin (v2): A powerful, clean user interface for the DE1 app that can even automate steaming by weighing milk.

  • D-Flow Profile: A simplified, spring-lever-inspired shot profile designed for intuitive, non-technical tuning.

  • 2. Quick guide to Streamline skin

Source: Quick guide to Streamline skin

The Streamline Skin, designed by Pulak and programmed by John Buckman, is a next-generation interface for the Decent Espresso (DE1) app. Its primary philosophy is "one tap to do everything," prioritizing speed and simplicity over the data-heavy "Insight" default. Despite its minimalist aesthetic, it features high functionality, including five quick-switch profile favorites, Light and Dark modes, and a "Zoomed" view that focuses purely on the extraction chart.

    Key features include:

  • Intuitive Controls: Simple tap-to-type full-screen keyboards for adjusting temperature, dose, and yield.

  • History & Data: Easy navigation through past shots with a chart that breaks extraction into preinfusion, extraction, and total stages.

  • Extensions: Deep integration with tools like the Graphical Flow Calibrator (for per-profile tuning) and Describe Your Espresso (DYE) for logging bean details.

  • Visual Indicators: Top-line stats for water levels, real-time weight (via Bluetooth scale), and heating status.

  • Streamline is designed for daily efficiency, making complex espresso variables accessible through an elegant, user-friendly layout suitable for both home enthusiasts and fast-paced cafe environments.

    3. How to use the "Upload to Visualizer" extension in the DE1 app

Source: How to use the "Upload to Visualizer" extension in the DE1 app

The "Upload to Visualizer" extension is a powerful community-driven tool for the Decent Espresso (DE1) app that allows users to automatically sync their shot data to the Visualizer.coffee platform. This integration transforms raw extraction data into a shareable, visual format for deep analysis.

    Key Features & Setup

  • Automatic Sync: Once activated, every shot—including pressure, flow, and temperature graphs—is automatically uploaded to your private or public Visualizer account.
  • Account Integration: Users must first create a free account on the Visualizer website and then enter their unique API key into the DE1 app settings to enable the link.
  • Enhanced Metadata: The extension works seamlessly with the "Describe Your Espresso" (DYE) tool, allowing you to attach bean types, roast dates, and taste notes to your data.
  • Community Learning: Beyond personal tracking, users can browse the community view to compare shots, troubleshoot issues, and even download other baristas' custom profiles directly to their own machine.

  • The Visualizer extension turns individual espresso sessions into a collaborative learning experience, helping users refine their technique and achieve greater consistency through data-backed insights.

    4. How to use the "Describe Your Espresso" extension in your DE1 app

Source: How to use the "Describe Your Espresso" extension in your DE1 app

The "Describe Your Espresso" (DYE) extension is a built-in tool for the Decent DE1 app designed to transform your shot history into a detailed digital coffee journal. By activating this extension, users can manually log critical variables such as bean type, roast date, flavor notes, grinder model, and specific grind settings for every extraction.

The extension significantly streamlines workflow with a "propagate beans" feature that auto-populates data for subsequent shots when using the same coffee. While the DE1 automatically records technical data (pressure, flow, and temperature), DYE adds the human element of taste and technique. For advanced analysis, it integrates seamlessly with the Visualizer.coffee community, allowing baristas to upload their logs, track their progress over time, and even download shot profiles from other users to replicate successful results.

    5. Portafilter basket analysis software by John Weiss

Source: Portafilter basket analysis software by John Weiss

In 2016, we commissioned John Weiss to develop a custom software suite for rigorous filter basket analysis. To support the coffee community, we've released this tool as a patent-free, open-source project. We use this exact software for our own quality control, and we're excited to share it with manufacturers and data-driven home baristas alike.

    How It Works

The software performs a deep dive into basket geometry using high-contrast photography. By placing a basket against a uniform light source, the program can:

  • Identify and count every hole.
  • Measure size consistency and distribution.
  • Detect manufacturing defects.

  • Get Started

Compatible with Windows and Linux, we provide a pre-compiled Windows binary for quick setup. You just need a high-resolution PNG of your basket and a Python environment. If you use our code publicly, please credit John Weiss and Decent Espresso.

The Decent App Explained guide provides a comprehensive tour of the software that powers the DE1 espresso machine, designed to help both beginners and advanced users master its capabilities.

    Core Interface & Navigation

The guide introduces the Insight skin (the default interface), which uses a series of functional tabs:

  • Workflow Tabs: Quick access to Flush, Espresso, Steam, and Hot Water functions.
  • Live Graphs: Real-time visual feedback on pressure, flow, and temperature, allowing baristas to diagnose and refine their extractions instantly.

  • Profiles & Customization

A major focus is on the Presets menu, where users can select or create coffee profiles using three distinct modes:

  • Pressure & Flow Modes: Fixed-parameter profiles for classic results.
  • Advanced Mode: Granular, step-by-step control over every variable of the shot.

  • Extensions & Maintenance

The app's functionality is further expanded through popular community extensions like Describe Your Espresso (DYE) for shot logging and Upload to Visualizer for deep data analysis. Finally, the guide covers critical maintenance workflows, including cleaning, descaling, and sensor calibration, ensuring the machine remains in peak operating condition.

This overview underscores the DE1's "open-source" spirit, showcasing how interchangeable skins and software updates keep the machine at the cutting edge of espresso technology.
